Mild earthquake reported near Bay View

A “micro” earthquake occurred Thursday evening about three miles south-southeast of Bay View, according to a preliminary report by the University of Washington Department of Earth and Space Sciences.

The UW department, which tracks earthquakes in the region, indicated that the earthquake, which occurred at about 6:48 p.m., was of 2.7 magnitude, relatively mild but big enough to be felt by local residents. Earthquakes below a magnitude of 3 rarely cause significant damage.
