Mount Vernon’s Ryan Schwehm makes a return Monday during overtime in a rain-shortened No. 1 singles tennis match against Lynden’s Will VanderVeen.

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon boys’ tennis team faced the Lynden Lions and a dose of nasty weather on Monday afternoon, and in the end weren’t quite able to overcome either.

Mount Vernon’s Ryan Schwehm and Jeremy Boyd got wins in singles and the duo of Sean Wells and Kevin Sutherland won their doubles match, but the Lions prevailed 4-3 in the Northwest Conference matchup.

Schwehm won the No. 1 singles match over Will VanderVeen 8-7(2) and Boyd beat Travis McKee at No. 4 8-1.

The matches were shortened because of the weather.

“The wind was really the big opponent for both teams, the wind and the rain,” Mount Vernon coach Vince Hughes said. “Lynden’s a pretty good team and they beat us in a couple of close matches.”

Hughes said he was especially pleased with the play of Boyd.

“Jeremy was serving really well today. He had a great match, he didn’t make any mistakes and served excellent,” he said.

Wells and Sutherland got an 8-3 victory over Lynden’s Kurtis Reardon and Brian Sumpter, 8-3.

The Bulldogs play at Anacortes today in a makeup match.

Stanwood Spartans 4
Oak Harbor Wildcats 3

OAK HARBOR — Kyle Koetje got the win at No. 1 singles and the Spartans swept doubles matches on their way to the Western Conference North Division win.

Koetje beat Derek Thomas 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Chris Gilmore and Zack Meyer beat Paul Jewell and Joel Valles 7-6(4), 0-6, 6-2; Kile Huck and Trevor Teigen beat Rick Baleros and David Marshall 6-0, 6-0; and Nate Houde and James McCane beat Matthew Rice and Max O’Dell 6-3, 6-0.

Oak Harbor got three wins in singles, with Ryan Evans downing Teague Nelson 6-1, 6-0; Jordan Kingma beating Jacob Hamiter 6-1, 6-1; and Josh Evans beating Kyle Kline 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Tennis matches rained out

Several area tennis teams had their matches postponed by rain. Anacortes’ home match against Sehome was moved to Friday and Sedro-Woolley’s home match against Burlington-Edison was postponed to Thursday.

Volleyball

Shoreline Christian Crusaders 3
Mount Vernon Christian Hurricanes 0

SHORELINE — Angela DeKoekkoek had eight kills, Anne Marie Visser had 23 assists and four aces and the Crusaders won 25-23, 25-23, 25-17.

“We played really hard, and our defense was better tonight than it has been all year. It was a fun game to watch,” Mount Vernon Christian coach Kathy Carman said.

Jessica Roemish had five kills, while Olivia Sparks had four aces and three kills for the Hurricanes (0-6 in Northwest 2B/1A League, 0-6 overall).
