MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon boys’ tennis team faced the Lynden Lions and a dose of nasty weather on Monday afternoon, and in the end weren’t quite able to overcome either.
Mount Vernon’s Ryan Schwehm and Jeremy Boyd got wins in singles and the duo of Sean Wells and Kevin Sutherland won their doubles match, but the Lions prevailed 4-3 in the Northwest Conference matchup.
Schwehm won the No. 1 singles match over Will VanderVeen 8-7(2) and Boyd beat Travis McKee at No. 4 8-1.
The matches were shortened because of the weather.
“The wind was really the big opponent for both teams, the wind and the rain,” Mount Vernon coach Vince Hughes said. “Lynden’s a pretty good team and they beat us in a couple of close matches.”
Hughes said he was especially pleased with the play of Boyd.
“Jeremy was serving really well today. He had a great match, he didn’t make any mistakes and served excellent,” he said.
Wells and Sutherland got an 8-3 victory over Lynden’s Kurtis Reardon and Brian Sumpter, 8-3.
The Bulldogs play at Anacortes today in a makeup match.
