The Samish Indian Nation and the Puget Sound Energy foundation announced today they will donate thousands of dollars toward the rebuilding an old railroad trestle on the Tommy Thompson Trail in Anacortes that was badly burned Oct. 15.
The Samish are giving $30,000 toward rebuilding, and the PSE foundation is donating $20,000, officials said.
That’s still just a small portion of what officials think it will take to rebuild the trestle that runs across Fidalgo Bay.
A very preliminary estimate of the repairs is about $400,000. The exact cost will depend on the requirements that the state will impose with the permits to build in the bay.
The tribe and the nonprofit arm of the utility company made the donation announcement Wednesday afternoon while standing on the trestle, just east of the site of the blaze that burned about 300 feet of the walkway.
The 3.3-mile parkway and the almost half-mile long trestle over the bay is considered one of the jewels of Anacortes.
Anacortes police and firefighters continue to investigate the suspicious fire, and the Anacortes Parks Foundation is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of whoever is responsible for the fire.
