The Island County Health Department reported 13 more cases of whooping cough Thursday.

Health Director Roger Case said the island will likely see a few more cases, but he believes the outbreak is slowing.

He said adults who contracted whooping cough, or pertussis, but do not exhibit strong symptoms are starting to report to doctors for treatment and vaccination.

The outbreak shut down Little League Baseball tournaments in early July. The county typically sees fewer than 10 cases in a year.

Case plans to meet with school nurses on Whidbey Island before the school year begins to promote vaccination with students either opting to not receive vaccinations or those who haven’t completed all the required vaccinations.

Skagit County reported three whooping cough cases earlier this week. One Mount Vernon child contracted pertussis while visiting Whidbey Island. The other two, a baby receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital in Seattle and a senior, were from Burlington and showed no relation to the Whidbey outbreak.
