Investigators seized more belongings from an Alger couple’s home Thursday in search of more clues to the slaying of Jeremy Scully of Bellingham.

The couple has been identified as “people of interest,” but are not being classified as suspects, said Skagit County Chief Criminal Deputy Will Reichardt.

“They could very possibly be innocent,” Reichardt said.

He would not disclose the age of the Alger couple. They live with their son, a minor, in the Highway 99 home. On Wednesday, The Bellingham Herald identified the couple as Kenneth and Venessa McBride.

Hikers found Scully’s body Sunday on Blanchard Mountain. He had been shot in the head, and evidence suggests he was killed at the site, probably by someone he knew, authorities said.

Reichardt said Scully and the couple were members of an adult Web site where people meet to have sex.

He would not comment on whether Scully, a 38-year-old substitute teacher and assistant track coach in Ferndale, met the couple through the sex-networking site. But he did say the site was part of the couple’s lifestyle.

“All indications that we have so far is that this is not a stranger — random murder — killing,” Reichardt said.

Deputies had already searched the home Sunday. That search yielded firearms, ammunition, computers, paperwork and a small bag of marijuana. But deputies decided that they needed a second look on Thursday.

That’s not uncommon in an ongoing investigation, Reichardt said.

He would not reveal if any of the firearms taken from the home Sunday matched the one used to shoot Scully. Reichardt would not comment on the items taken from the house Thursday.

The results of the search have been sealed by Skagit County District Court.

Although no arrests have been made in the slaying, Reichardt does not believe the public is in danger.

“On a major case like this, you don’t want to make a hasty arrest just to get someone in custody if there is no good reason to do so,” he said.
