The Holiday Motel is back in business after its license was suspended by the Washington State Department of Health for safety hazards last month.

The motel, 2903 Commercial Ave., was closed June 8 after investigators found numerous electrical and gas line problems throughout the rooms, widespread fire and safety violations and many maintenance and sanitation problems.

Donn Moyer, DOH media relations manager, said the owners made corrections and the motel was reinspected June 17.

Inspectors found the violations were remedied and the motel was able to operate in a safe and healthy way.

A judge issued an order to reinstate the motel’s license June 18.

“We are in the position of having to think first of the healthy and safety of guests who stay in hotels and motels,” Moyer said. “The businesses are typically very interested in returning to compliance, it’s their livelihood.”

Motel room conditions included unsafe electrical wiring; non-working smoke detectors; unsanitary floors, walls and fixtures; and other unsanitary conditions.

A “live” gas pipe was present in one room — so that if the valve was turned, gas would be released into the unit.

Motels offering three or more units to guests for less than 30 days must be licensed by Washington state’s Facilities and Services Licensing Program.

The program licenses about 1,700 facilities in the state and enforces health and safety standards.
