Mount Vernon to consider building a splash park

MOUNT VERNON — Rain is falling now, but city officials will be looking ahead to next summer tonight when they plan for a new splash park.

The city was awarded a $322,000 grant from the state earlier this year to build an interactive splash park and boardwalk at Kiwanis Park, which opened in the summer of 2008.

Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation Director Larry Otos said Mount Vernon will match those funds with park impact fee revenues, which must be used for park projects.

Tonight the council will consider contracts with two Mount Vernon firms to design the splash park and boardwalk. One contract is with Semaru Engineering & Surveying, for $27,900, and the other is with Eccos Design, LLC, the same firm that designed Mount Vernon’s planned riverfront promenade, for $15,850.

He said the splash park will be a bit larger than the one in Burlington’s Maiben Park and the planned boardwalk will stretch through wetlands at the park to neighborhoods to the east.  Otos said park visitors will be able to enjoy water elements from a distance, like a fountain, or walk right through jets of shooting water to cool off on a hot day.

“The goal is to be playing and spraying in June of 2010,” Otos said.

Tonight’s City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Police and Courts Campus, 1805 Continental Place.

Skagitnative you are making my point other than taking free money. My main point is that the State should not be funding a “Non profit”…

I am late posting on this, but I do know how grants work and Skagitdad is right, to would be spent somewhere if not here, but that really isn’t…

It’s obvious the big problem is with how the state spends it’s money.  It is easy to sit back and say how the money should be spent…
