CAMPBELL LAKE — Fire officials believe a lawn mower started a nearly one-acre brush fire on the south side of Campbell Lake Wednesday afternoon.

The owner of the land had cut his hay field a few days ago, and was using a riding mower to do a some touch ups Wednesday afternoon. At one time, he looked behind him when he saw flames.

“Apparently that sparked it,” said Vince Streano, a spokesman for the Mount Erie Fire District No. “It does go to show you how dry the conditions are.”
Rainfall for this July is less than one third of what it normally is, Streano said.

The brush fire was put out by three fire engine crews.

“Nothing was really endangered,” he said.
