Move over, “American Idol.” Here comes Kyle Wolden, prize-winning songwriter. The Mount Vernon 8-year-old won first place in the kids’ category in a contest held recently at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Kyle is a student at Conway Elementary School and the son of Tony and Mari Wolden. He has been treated at Children’s Hospital since last fall for an illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which typically occurs from an E. coli infection and attacks various body organs.
Patients at Children’s were invited to create songs and poetry about hand hygiene, and the winning selections were recorded to play when hand sanitizer dispensers are used at key locations around the hospital.
Kyle’s song “Use Purell throughout the day to keep the germs and bugs away” now plays every time someone uses “Kyle’s” dispenser to sanitize their hands.
Children’s used the creative approach to further their efforts to educate patients and families about the importance of hand hygiene and to improve hand hygiene compliance at the hospital.
