New orca spotted

This new orca calf, swimming alongside its mother, was discovered today Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2008, hours after its birth on the west side of San Juan Island, say scientists with The Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor. The baby orca, designated L111, was born to L pod. (Provided by The Center for Whale Research)

A newborn orca was discovered Wednesday hours after its mother gave birth on the west side of San Juan Island, say scientists with The Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor.

The baby’s 34-year-old mother, designated L47, returned to Puget Sound with the rest of L pod this past week, said Ken Balcomb of the research center.

The baby, designated L111, has two other siblings, Moonlight and Muncher, and its mother is nicknamed Marina, according to the Adopt an Orca program at The Whale Museum, also in Friday Harbor. The newborn does not yet have a nickname. Orcas are normally nicknamed by the museum’s program after they are about 2 years old.

The newborn is one of the endangered southern resident killer whales, which are protected under federal law.
