SEATTLE (AP) — A new online service aims to match Washington scholarships with students.

Soroptimist International of Seattle Metropolitan says the idea for the new Web site comes from the experiences of local scholarship providers that have sometimes have trouble finding applicants.

The Seattle women’s group distributes a number of small scholarships for single mothers who want to go to college. And it sometimes has a hard timing giving money away.

So the group has joined one of the free online scholarship clearinghouses to make it easier to reach potential scholarship recipients. thewashboard.org will be similar to national scholarship-matching sites like fastweb.com.

The Washington site plans to launch in January. The online service will be free to both students and scholarship providers. The group says 50 providers that give away more than 1,700 scholarship awards have already joined thewashboard.org.
