If you’ve got a sweet tooth, a new Anacortes business has something for you.
San Juan Toffee Co. offers everything from homemade toffee, chocolate and honey to custom-made gift baskets, local crafts and specialty foods.
Owners Jim and Linda Wormell opened the business at 2702 Commercial Ave. earlier this month. A grand opening is planned for July.
“We decided that between the community itself and the tourist industry it would be a great place to open the business,” Jim Wormell said. “It seemed like such a forward-thinking, small-business oriented community. That appealed to me.”
The couple have been in the business since 1995 and previously owned a similar store in Leavenworth for five years.
One of the company’s main staples — its toffee — comes in 25 flavors using recipes invented by the Wormells. Flavors include Zebra (butter toffee on hazelnuts and amaretto swirled with dark and white chocolate), Macadamia Heaven (butter toffee on macadamia nuts topped with white chocolate and almonds) and English-style Toffee (butter toffee on almonds topped with dark chocolate and walnuts).
The store also carries eight different kinds of honey, including tropical blossom and poison oak. Wormell said they plan to expand the honey portion, adding up to 30 different products, including candles and soaps. Bulk honey is also for sale for $2.95 a pound.
The company specializes in custom-made gift baskets, starting at $20. Wormell said they offer world-wide shipping and free delivery in Anacortes.
Local crafts are featured at the store, including pottery, jewelry and other wearables.
A room at the front of the business offers cooking and baking supplies in bulk at discounted prices.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Its Web site, http://www.sanjuantoffeeco.com, is planned to be up and running in August.
