OAK HARBOR — Tyson Van Dam is coming home to coach.
Van Dam, a 2001 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, has been hired as the Wildcats’ new baseball coach.
Van Dam will take the spot vacated by Jim Waller, who stepped down after 30 years, having guided the Wildcats to an appearance in the 1990 state championship game.
Van Dam pitched for Edmonds Community College and the University of North Carolina-Pembrook.
“I’ve always wanted to coach in Oak Harbor. I always thought I’d like coaching and teaching what I’ve learned in college,” he said.
Oak Harbor athletic director Nicki Luper said, “He’s got a passion for the game. All of his references made positive comments regarding his relationship with kids — being able to work with kids that age and make connections with them.”
Van Dam has coached American Legion baseball.
He said he’s looking forward to coaching the Wildcats.
“Obviously pitching is going to be a big part of it, and getting to some of the basics and fundamentals,” he said.
