Search for missing man to resume Sunday

Searchers from Skagit Bay Search and Rescue look for a man Saturday who is presumed missing after being last seen pressure washing his boat in the Swinomish Channel near the Twin Bridges.

LA CONNER — Rescue workers called off a search of the Swinomish Channel Saturday evening for a man in his 60s who friends reported missing in the afternoon.

The search will resume today, but Fire District 13 Chief Roy Horn says the man’s chances for survival dimmed quickly if he fell into the icy water.

The U.S. Coast Guard and rescue workers from at least six other local agencies swept the channel with seven boats, searching from La Conner to March Point. At 6 p.m. a Coast Guard helicopter was finishing up at the south end of Padilla Bay.

No one knew Saturday how long the man had been missing. His name was not released because family members had not been notified of his disappearance.

Horn said the chill of the water would send even the most fit person into shock and likely kill a man within 20 minutes.

One of the man’s friends said he called police when he found a pressure washer still running near his friend’s newly purchased sail boat and saw the man’s dog pacing and barking.

A wooden paddle from his friend’s boat was floating in circles in the water, he said. The pressure washer was almost out of gas.
