State officials are asking the public’s help to locate the sources of two oily sheens in the waters of Skagit and Whatcom counties.
The spills were reported Saturday and Monday, according to the state Department of Ecology. The first spill was reported Sunday morning in Hale Passage, near Lummi Island. The second spill extended from Eliza Island, southeast of Lummi, into Samish Bay, and was reported Monday afternoon.
Both spills were more than a mile long and greater than 600 feet wide. By the time they were reported, they had spread to be only molecules thick on the water’s surface, which is too thin to be cleaned up, state officials said.
The sheens were a petroleum-based product, likely fuel or oil from boats. It’s illegal to spill oil into state waters.
Ecology officials ask anyone with information on the sources to call the oil spill hot line at 800-258-5990.
