A 37-year-old Mount Vernon man was struck by a car and killed while walking down the middle of the road Saturday night.

Earl John Wheeler was walking down Gunderson road close to the intersection with Baker Heights road at about 10 p.m., and was not visible to vehicles, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.

The vehicle that struck the man was driven by a 36-year-old Mount Vernon woman, according to reports.

Wheeler suffered a severe head injury and died instantly, said Art Dick, Skagit County deputy coroner.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in the accident, said Leary.
