Port of Anacortes commissioners, city council members and others joined Dakota Creek Vice President Mike Nelson at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Pier 1 project July 16.
The redevelopment project, a joint effort between the port and DCI, began last week with dredging of the ship basin.
The project also entails removing two docks and their creosote-treated piles from the ship basins and building a new 40-foot wide, 350-foot long concrete pier with galvanized steel piles strong enough to hold large cranes.
On the uplands, some smaller buildings will be removed and a lateral rail transfer system installed allowing DCI to move vessels around the shipyard.
