Volunteers with Soroptimist International of Fidalgo Island and Soroptimist International of Anacortes will distribute 3,000 carnations to Anacortes women on Tuesday in what has become a yearly event to communicate the importance of regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.
Each flower provides contact information for assistance with funding the necessary exams.
In 2007, Jean Fantini of Donatello Flowers and Gifts was inspired to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the women of Anacortes. She partnered with Anacortes Family Medicine and Soroptimist International of Fidalgo Island to distribute carnations with important health information attached and dubbed the event “Pink About It!”
Now, Soroptimist International of Anacortes joins the partnership. Soroptimist International of the Americas is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.
In its model program kit “Early Detection of Breast Cancer,” Soroptimist offers its clubs and members information about breast cancer and step-by-step instructions on a local-level project to provide free mammography to poor women.
Soroptimist International of the Americas publishes a white paper on Breast Cancer and Low-Income Women available at http://www.soroptimist.org/whitepapers/wp_bcliw.html.
