Plows at work on North Cascades passes

Crews from the Washington Department of Transportation today plowed about 2 inches of slush of the North Cascades Highway from Rainy Pass east for about 10 miles to Cutthroat Ridge just below Washington Pass.

Temperatures were hovering at around 35 degrees at 9:30 a.m. and the forecast calls for more snow on and off throughout the day, according to Twisp WSDOT Maintenance Supervisor Don Becker.

Forecasters predict snow levels could drop down near 4,000 feet this morning with frequent snow showers and squalls throughout the day over the North Cascades passes. Roads will likely remain wet at the 4,000-foot level, however, 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation is likely above 5,000 feet near the Washington Pass area.

Snow showers are expected to continue tonight with snow levels falling down to near 3,500 feet with potential road accumulations down to 4,000 feet. Another system is expected to bring an increase in mountain snow on Thursday with snow levels possibly dropping below 3,000 feet.

WSDOT crews will keep plowing the North Cascades Highway as necessary, Becker said.

"This isn't the least bit unusual," said Jeff Adamson, WSDOT spokesperson for the North Central Region. "Our crews will keep the highway open until avalanches close it, which is usually between Thanksgiving week and the second week of December."

Adamson said he already received calls from several hunters asking about driving conditions over the pass.

"Becker says it's not bad, but don't try to pass the snow plows, it's pretty easy to lose control in slush when you're driving too fast and start hydroplaning. If you go — be prepared."
