BURLINGTON — When police arrived at the Burlington Kmart in response to a burglary alarm Tuesday night, they were surprised by who they found.

A 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy were carrying stolen merchandise from the store at the direction of their father, who was inside, said Burlington Police Assistant Chief Dave Stafford.

The 28-year-old father was arrested and is being held on investigation of burglary and theft. Police suspect the family of trying to steal about $6,000 worth of jewelry as well as electronics and video game players, Stafford said.

Police were alerted by an automatic alarm in the store at about 10 p.m. A van with open doors was parked near a door into the store that had been forced open, Stafford said. The children were met by police as they exited the store, and their father gave himself up inside.

The boys were turned over to a relative, Stafford said.
