MOUNT VERNON — For the second time this year, Mount Vernon police are warning local business owners to be on the lookout for a fraudulent solicitation for funds.
The fraud attempt involves a person who contacts local business owners regarding an opportunity to secure sponsorship or advertising in souvenir programs. The person uses names and affiliations associated with local sports programs and tournaments.
Employees are often pressured by the man to pay under the guise that today is the deadline, and the owner of the business has already approved this, according to a police news release.
The person might also provide a professional-looking invoice, complete with a tax identification number. Recent frauds involve a man asking for $89 for winter sports schedules.
Police urge businesses to validate similar legitimate advertising requests by contacting the sports organizations directly. The department issued a similar warning in June.
