LA CONNER — Trent Kitchen took care of one win with his arm. The Concrete baseball team’s bats did the trick in the other.
The Lions swept a doubleheader from La Conner on Friday, winning the opener 7-0 and the nightcap 22-2.
The second game was stopped after five innings by the 10-run rule.
Kitchen was nearly unhittable in the opener, striking out 15 for the Lions (8-2 Northwest 2B/1A League, 10-3 overall).
“Trent had good control of his fastball and curve,” Lions coach Jim Newby said. “He kept them off balance.”
The Braves (3-6, 4-7) managed just a pair of singles against Kitchen, but did end a statistical oddity by playing a full seven-inning game. La Conner’s first nine games — four wins and five losses — were all decided by 10 runs or more and stopped early.
“I was proud of the way we played in the first game,” Braves coach Jeremiah LeSourd said. “It’s nice to see one through to the end.”
The Lions bats would make sure there would only be five innings in the second game, taking advantage of La Conner walks and timely hitting to score 22 runs over the first four innings.
Jordan DeZarn and Kyler Howell both scored in each of the first four innings, and Tyler Kales scored twice during a 10-run fourth inning when all 10 runs scored with two outs.
Seth Rauch got the win with three innings on the mound and also capped the 10-run rally with a grand slam.
Both teams had some fun with the lopsided game.
The Braves pitched four different players, including catchers Matt Burlingame and Tommy Peth, and at one point Concrete hitters began switching around to hit left-handed.
“We’ve got a mutual respect between both teams,” Newby said. “It’s good to see two teams that can talk with one another and not have it be an argument. It’s good to see the two schools get along.”
