CONCRETE — The Concrete baseball team sewed up a district playoff berth with authority Friday as Trent Kitchen threw a perfect game against the Orcas Island Vikings.
Kitchen’s performance led the Lions to a 10-0 victory in a game shortened to six innings by the 10-run rule. Concrete would finish off the sweep with a 12-7 victory in the second game.
Kitchen struck out 15 of the 18 batters he faced, including the first nine. A foul pop-up and two grounders were the only help he required from his defense.
“Trent was in control the whole way,” Lions coach Jim Newby said. “He totally deserved it. He was overpowering.”
Newby said it was the first perfect game he’s had in 12 years as a coach at the school.
“At the end they tried to stay away from him in the dugout,” Newby said.
As it turned out, the Lions finished off the perfect game at the plate, scoring three in the sixth to put the 10-run rule in effect.
Kitchen also went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two. Derek Rice and Seth Rauch each went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Rauch got the win in the second game with five innings of work and also drove in two runs. Chris Smith had three hits and and Brandon Kales had a pair of singles and two RBI.
