MOUNT VERNON — The holidays have been over for a couple of weeks, but the Mount Vernon boys’ basketball team was still in a giving mood Tuesday against Sehome.
Jake Weber-Koetje scored 26 points, Ray Walser added 21 and the Bulldogs dished out 27 assists on 31 field goals in an 82-48 Northwest Conference win over the Mariners.
“We looked for the other guy tonight, and not ourselves,” Mount Vernon coach Torey Swanson said.
Point guard Breyden Moore led the pass-happy Bulldogs with 11 assists, including five in a scorching first quarter which saw the Bulldogs go 10-of-15 while building a 14-point lead. One of Moore’s assists emerged from out of a double team to find a cutting Walser; another found Weber-Koetje for the first of his six 3-pointers.
“I was impressed by their quickness. They got by us and got some easy looks early,” Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said. “They got the ball to their shooters outside and Walser inside.”
Weber-Koetje ended the evening 6-of-10 from outside the arc; Walser was 9-of-10 from the field and added six rebounds.
While the Bulldogs (3-0 conference, 6-3 overall) produced efficient offense, Swanson said he was also pleased with their defense.
“The kids came out ready to play defense. We were the aggressor tonight,” he said. “We wanted to limit (Sehome’s) ability to drive. We did a good job with help defense and recovering.”
Sehome committed 26 turnovers and shot 14-of-34.
Tyler Miksovsky led the Mariners with 23 points and hit four 3-pointers.
Swanson said he was also pleased by the play of the bench, which chipped in with 21 points and solid play to help the Bulldogs keep rolling.
“Any time the bench comes in, we want to be able to maintain our level of play,” he said.
The Mariners (1-1, 5-5) are still getting used to play without Dane Thrope, their top scorer, who injured his knee last week against Sedro-Woolley and was lost for the season.
“All of our offense was based around him,” said LaBree.
The Mariners found one way to show support for their injured teammate, wearing T-shirts with his number, 2 on the back and his initials on the front.
