MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon High School appears to have its new football coach.
The agenda for next week’s school board meeting indicates Jaxon Schweikert, who most recently was the head football coach of Filer High School in Filer, Idaho, will be the hire.
The move still requires the approval of the Mount Vernon School Board, and newly hired Mount Vernon athletic director Dave Riddle declined to comment before the next board meeting, scheduled for July 23.
If hired, Schweikert would succeed Benji Sonnichsen, who stepped down in May after three seasons. He would also serve as a physical education teacher.
Filer competes in the Idaho High School Activities Association’s 3A classification — comparable to somewhere between the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s 1A and 2A classifications.
Mount Vernon was 6-5 last season and advanced to the postseason before falling to Ferndale in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
