SEATTLE — The Concrete football team couldn’t have had a much better game to propel itself into the first week of league play than the one the Lions had Saturday night against Seattle Lutheran.

Running back Derek Rice ran for four touchdowns, Kyler Howell added 161 yards rushing and the Lions’ defense pitched a shutout in a 27-0 non-league victory over the Saints.

Rice rushed for 123 yards on 14 carries and had scoring runs of 9, 8, 11 and 13 yards in the victory. Howell chewed up his 161 yards on 14 carries to help the Lions improve to 3-1 overall.

Concrete coach Ron Rood said the team was especially pleased with the defensive effort.

“We’re really happy with the defensive shutout. They threatened a couple of times, but we did great overall,” he said. “Our team speed was equal to theirs, and they’re really fast. We were more physical and we tackled better (than in previous games).”

Rood said the team blocked well to open holes for the runners.

“We’re pleased with the kids’ effort and are looking forward to starting league next week. All of those league games are important.”

Concrete will open league play with a game at Orcas Island at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
