LA CONNER — Speed kills.
In Friday Harbor’s case it wins, too.
Running back Austin Scheffer had a pair of touchdowns and a speedy Wolverine football team jumped out to an early lead on its way to a 43-6 non-league victory Friday night over La Conner.
The teams traded touchdowns early — although the Braves failed on the extra-point attempt on theirs — but from there it was off to the races for Friday Harbor.
“They had great team speed and we struggled with that,” La Conner coach Patrick Brown said. “We couldn’t match their speed.”
The Wolverines marched down the field quickly in the first quarter, with quarterback Michael Ausilio hitting receiver Jordyn Taylor for a 25-yard pass in the drive’s biggest play.
Ausilio added a 15-yard touchdown run to cap the drive.
La Conner answered later in the quarter with Nathan Lease punching the ball into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run.
Lease’s run came on fourth down.
Another fourth-down play earlier, a roughing the passer call on Friday Harbor, had kept the Braves’ drive alive.
“We played well. Friday Harbor is a heck of a team — big, fast and physical,” Brown said. “We played physical, especially in the first quarter when we had a chance to tie them.”
But Friday Harbor quickly took the reins, with Scheffer scoring on runs of 45 and 2 yards in the second quarter and Cody Price adding a 24-yard field goal in the third.
The Wolverines added three more scores in the fourth quarter: a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ausilioi to Jordan Nash and short-yardage runs by Cody West and Michael Davis.
Although it wasn’t a score, Friday Harbor added another electric play in the game on a 50-yard punt return by Roy Taylor.
“The kids played with intensity for four full quarters. We looked to come out with intensity and finish with intensity,” Friday Harbor coach Darrin Scheffer said.
Scheffer said he was pleased to see such a varied offensive attack from the Wolverines (2-1 overall).
“We get as many players involved as we can and get the ball moving in the right direction,” he said.
Running back Michael Knowles led Friday Harbor on the ground with 62 yards. Ausilio added 49 yards rushing to his 88 yards through the air.
La Conner was led by Macky Zavala’s 46 yards, who got most of his carries late in the contest; Brandon Drye added 40 yards.
Brown said the Braves (0-3) made some offensive changes this week, and said they looked good implementing the first of those changes.
“We have a big, talented offensive line ... we’re going to get the ball behind that offensive line and run the ball,” he said.
