ANACORTES — The Mount Baker football team was able to shake off a pair of costly turnovers Friday night, and before too long it had done the same thing with the Anacortes Seahawks.
Running back David Kashubin ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns and the Mountaineers survived a pair of turnovers Friday night to pull away from Anacortes for a 24-14 Northwest Conference victory.
The Mountaineers had two costly turnovers: Zac Lepper’s interception in the second quarter, which was returned 63 yards for a touchdown by Anacortes linebacker Mark Medalia, and a fumble in the third, which led to a 2-yard scoring run by the Seahawks’ Daniel Codd.
But each time, the Mountaineers managed to answer, most loudly in the fourth quarter, when they got a 32-yard field goal from Jose Mata to break a 14-14 tie and a 2-yard scoring run from Kashubin. It his second of the night, and put the game away.
“We didn’t hang out heads ... we didn’t get down,” Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said. “The kids had a chance to not get it done, but they came back.”
Kashubin said, “We didn’t hang our heads after we made mistakes. That sums it up. Some times (mistakes) stick in the back of your head, but you’ve got to forget about them.”
Zac Lepper threw for 124 yards and a touchdown — a 33-yard strike down the right sideline to Logan Packard — in the victory.
“The quarterback probably had his best night so far throwing the ball,” Ron Lepper said.
The Mountaineers improved to 2-0 in classification, 2-1 in the Northwest Conference and 2-1 overall.
Anacortes coach Bill Evans said the Seahawks got a good performance from its defense, most notably Medalia, who had both the interception return for a touchdown and the hit that led to the Mount Baker fumble.
“I’m proud of the defense,” he said. “They stepped up and hit, and Mark Medalia was awesome.”
The Seahawks were bedeviled by turnovers, with the team committing three.
“In the second half we were blocking and moving the ball well, but then we’d put it on the ground,” Evans said.
The Seahawks were also hampered by injuries, with three players forced to leave the game and the coaching staff forced to make quick adjustments to the lineup.
“We had to shuffle guys all around,” Evans said.
Quarterback Chris Stoneham was the Seahawks’ leading rusher with 14 carries for 58 yards. He also passed for 66 yards, with Torrey Merritt his leading target.
Merritt had five catches for 33 yards.
Anacortes fell to 0-2, 0-3, 0-3.
