CONCRETE — A speedy Concrete football team found ways to score on both offense and defense to sprint past Liberty Bell 45-7 Friday in its season opener.

Kyler Howell scored three touchdowns and Chris Smith had a touchdown run, an interception return and field goal to help the Lions to the win.

Howell had touchdown runs of 31 and 1 yards, and added a 27-yard interception return. Smith had a 40-yard interception return on Liberty Bell’s first pass attempt and added a 47-yard scoring run and a 23-yard field goal.

Lucas Scherer added a touchdown run.

“Like all first games, we had some ups and downs,” Concrete coach Ron Rood said. “But our team speed was good, our pursuit on defense was good and our secondary played well, especially Smith and (Derek) Rice.”

Rood said he also liked the play of the linebacker group, which includes Howell, Sean Fipps and Scherer.

Cascade Bruins 15
Oak Harbor Wildcats 10

OAK HARBOR — Cascade quarterback Aaron Frye had a 60-yard touchdown pass and a 13-yard scoring run as the Bruins toppled the Wildcats in the season debut for both.

Frye was also the game’s leading rusher with 97 yards.

“We had a really hard time with their quarterback,” Oak Harbor coach Jay Turner said. “He’s one of the faster high school athletes I’ve ever seen. He has a gear you just don’t see in high school.”

Jay Jordan had a 37-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Lewis for the Wildcats’ only touchdown. Kevin Flavin added a 22-yard field goal.

King’s Knights 51
La Conner Braves 12

SEATTLE — King’s quarterback Thomas Vincent had a huge game, rushing for 139 yards and four touchdowns and throwing for 196 yards and two scores against the Braves. Erik Lindeman had two touchdown runs for La Conner, one from 1 yard out, the other from 5.
