SHORELINE — The Sedro-Woolley Cubs football team has a win streak.

Derek Garcia ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Cubs won their second straight game, blasting Shorecrest 43-14 in a non-league contest.

Sedro-Woolley (2-3 overall) built upon a 35-10 win over Anacortes a week earlier.

“It’s very important,” Cubs coach Bryan Alexander said. “We talked last week about getting some momentum going. It’s big for a program that hasn’t had a lot of success the past few years and is learning to win. We’re learning how to finish teams off.

“It’s learning that whole process. Getting two back to back, it has been huge for us.”

Cody Pohren also had a pair of touchdown runs, from 2 and 15 yards, and Ian O’Bryan scored from 5 yards out.

When Garcia hit Ryan Morgan for a 70-yard touchdown pass, the Cubs took a 28-7 lead into the half.

Garcia pushed the advantage further in the second half, scoring from 12 yards out in the third and 20 yards out in the fourth for the Cubs.

“We kind of got off to a slow start, but the kids settled in and took the game over,” Alexander said. “It was pouring down there, but we were able to control them up front and mash the ball at them.”

Garcia finished with 117 yards rushing and 107 passing. Pohren added 90 yards and O’Bryan 60 on the ground.

“The defense played very well too,” Alexander said. “We were physical and took away their running game.”

Stanwood Spartans 35
Monroe Bearcats 14

MONROE — In his first game of the season, Brad Gee ran for 128 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Stanwood Spartan broke into the win column.

Stanwood improved to 1-2 in Western Conference North Division play and 1-3 overall, while Monroe is 0-3 and 2-4.

Gee scored on touchdown runs of 4, 24 and 3 yards. Ryan Schroyer added touchdown runs of 1 and 3 and finished with 61 yards. Stanwood never trailed in the game, but didn’t put it away until it scored two fourth quarter touchdowns.

Snohomish Panthers 14
Oak Harbor Wildcats 7

OAK HARBOR — The Wildcats and Panthers played a ground-pounding Western Conference North Division game with the Panthers eventually grinding their way to the victory.

“This game was really physical,” Oak Harbor coach Jay Turner said. “It was really back and forth.”

Snohomish held a 14-0 lead at halftime after scoring a touchdown in each of the first two.

“We dug ourselves a hole,” Turner said. “Against a team like Snohomish, who is so good at controlling the ball, you just can’t do that. It’s just tough to come back.”

The Wildcats eventually got onto the board in the fourth quarter when quarterback James Jordan scrambled into the end zone from 5 yards out.

Snohomish’s Ray Purviance led all rushers with 15 carries for 103 yards while Cameron Woolsey carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards.

Oak Harbor’s Stephen Lewis led the Wildcats in rushing with 12 carries for 71 yards.

Darrington Loggers 31
La Conner Braves 14

LA CONNER — The Braves held a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter, but were unable to hold it as Darrington stormed back in the Northwest 1A/2B League opener for both teams.

“We simply made too many mistakes,” said La Conner coach Patrick Brown. “Way to many turnovers and they all seemed to be at crucial times.”

La Conner snagged the early lead following a Brandon Drye 11-yard touchdown run and a Matt Burlingame 8-yard score. That would be all the scoring the Braves would muster.

“We played pretty well, until midway through that second quarter,” Brown said.

While La Conner couldn’t punch it into the end zone, the Loggers were just getting started. Midway through the second quarter, on a third-and-21, Darrington’s Mike Parris took the handoff and rumbled 80 yards for the touchdown.

Then Johnny Loughnan scampered in for the touchdown from 15 yards out to give Darrington the 19-14 lead at halftime.

Darrington was the beneficiary of several Braves turnovers in the fourth quarter, none bigger than a shanked Logger punt that managed to find the back of a La Conner player. After a defensive stop, the Braves once again turned it over.

The Loggers wasted little time in driving down a short field for the score.

“We did a good job stopping them,” Brown said. “We just had too many turnovers.  We played hard and we hit hard.”
