ANACORTES — Ten-point scoring runs are common in basketball. The 20-point variety are less frequent, but pop up here and there when one team gets hot and the other cold.
Thirty-point spurts require something else — like, say, divine inspiration?
“The Momentum Goddess was with us,” Burlington-Edison sophomore Kristine Thoe said after the Tigers scored 30 straight points against Anacortes during Monday’s 61-26 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over the Seahawks.
Thoe played a big part in the run, scoring the final 10 points of the first half to turn a 15-13 nail-biter into a comfortable 25-13 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, the Burlington-Edison run continued. The Tiger defense forced turnovers, and as the team’s offense found cohesion, the points started adding up. Christy Stewart scored nine of the Tigers’ 20 points in the third quarter before Anacortes finally snapped the skid with a minute left in the quarter.
“The Momentum Goddess is a fickle lady,” Tigers coach Mike Buckholz said. “When she goes your way, you realize how important she is. Sometimes she’s with you, sometimes she’s not.”
By that time the score stood 45-13 and there was little the Seahawks could do to climb back in.
“I don’t think I prepared this team to play Burlington-Edison,” Anacortes coach Ken Welk said. “They came out doing some things defensively, putting a lot of pressure on us, and I don’t think I prepared them to handle that.”
Thoe finished with a game-high 20 points, while Stewart added 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Brenna Anderson finished with 12 points for the Tigers, who are 7-0.
“We were really pumped up. We haven’t beaten them in such a long time,” Thoe said.
The Seahawks (4-3) jumped out to the early lead, stifling the Tigers with interior defense in the early going. Neither team found points plentiful, leading to a 15-13 score midway through the second quarter.
“I thought we played really good defense and settled down on offense,” Buckholz said. “Anacortes controlled the tempo in the first quarter. We just got on track, got contributions from a lot of players. It’s nice to get Anacortes back. They’ve been putting it to us for a while.”
Hannah Holgeerts had eight points, six rebounds and four blocked shots, leading Anacortes in all three categories.
“These games are all about process,” Welk said. “They’re great games to have, though obviously you’d like to have it go better. But you have to go through something like that to be aware of weaknesses.”
