ANACORTES — The Anacortes girls’ soccer team found offense — and plenty of it — in the first half Thursday against Lynden Christian.

Mariel McCown had two goals and two assists, Catherine Miles had a pair of goals and the Seahawks beat the Lyncs 6-1 in a Northwest Conference game.

The game was tied at one goal apiece before the Seahawks went on a 4-0 spree in the span of 12 minutes in the first half.

The Seahawks’ Sarah Koss found the goal for the first score of the game, getting to a ball that bounced off the crossbar. Lynden Christian answered in the 23rd minute with a goal by Kenzie De Boer.

But in the 26th minute, the Seahawks started a burst of scoring that lifted them to the win.

First, Miles caught up to a rebound of a McCown attempt to score in the 26th minute. Then McCown notched a score off a Jessie Olsen assist, followed by a goal from Jasper Sortun.

Miles scored again, this time off another McCown assist, to make it 5-1.

“We were passing the ball well and got lots of touches,” Miles said.

“We moved the ball well,” Anacortes coach Ken Welk said. “When we can go 80 yards and move the ball in and out and get a scoring attack like that, we’re showing progress from earlier in the season.”

McCown scored the Seahawks’ lone second-half goal off an assist from Ana Fakkema.

Micaela Baca was in goal for Anacortes, (4-2 conference and 5-4 overall).

Welk thought the Seahawks played better defense after halftime, when they held Lynden Christian to three shots, one which went off the crossbar in the final seconds.

“We had better defense in the second half, and Micaela had some nice plays in goal,” he said.

Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said the Lyncs (1-5, 2-7) improved in the second half by tightening their defense.

“They started off with the goal (by De Beoer) and I felt like they had momentum, but they didn’t play focused and gave up some things in the first half,” he said. “I thought they did better in the second half.”
