Mount Vernon’s Monica Chavez jumps into the arms of teammate Emily Mattson after Chavez scored a goal in the second half of the Bulldogs’ game against Lynden.

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon girls’ soccer team started Northwest Conference play Tuesday in the same manner it had gone undefeated in non-conference play: by pitching a shutout.

Tia Brogna scored two goals, Ashley Morrison served up two assists on corner kicks and the Bulldogs topped Lynden 5-0 to get off to a winning start in conference play.

“It was good ball movement for such a young team — we kept the ball well,” Mount Vernon coach Gary Warman said of his squad, which features only one senior. “(Lynden) is a good, organized team, but we saw too much of the ball for them.”

Brogna scored a pair of goals for the Bulldogs, first on a nice serve from Victoria Divita in the 13th minute, then when she made a nice move around the defender, dribbled across the goal mouth and put a second one into net in the second half.

Morrison served up a pair of set-piece goals: first when she served a ball that Jackie Divita slammed home just under the bar in the 33rd minute, then when Kiahna Norman pounced on the corner from about 25 yards out in the second half.

“It was nice to see the kids get goals on set pieces,” Warman said.

Monica Chavez also had a goal on a ball sent in from the corner by Brogna.

Warman said he was especially pleased by the play of Jackie Divita and Darrien Dolquist-Larson; he said the entire defense played well.

The Bulldogs were playing without freshman Grace Lemley, whom Warman said has been playing well in the early season. She has an ankle injury.

Mount Vernon took eight corner kicks. Lynden didn’t take any.

It was the fourth straight win and the fourth straight shutout by the Bulldogs, who will face another test when they take on Sehome on Thursday on the road.

Sehome edged Sedro-Woolley 1-0 on Tuesday in the conference opener for both teams.
