MOUNT VERNON — Different year, same results.
The Archbishop Murphy girls’ soccer team downed Burlington-Edison 3-0 to win the Northwest 2A District title — a smiliar result as last year’s tournament title game, after which the Tigers went on to play in the state championship game.
Forward Lindsey Bos scored on a header, freshman midfielder Asaha Pabisz scored on a breakaway goal and Mandy Huggins added a late goal as the Wildcats went on to claim a No. 1 seed from to the state tournament from the district.
Burlington-Edison earned a No. 2 seed and will host Mark Morris at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon High School.
The game was scoreless until Bos bolted forward to head in a perfectly-placed crossing pass following a short corner in the 57th minute.
The Wildcats added to the lead when Pabisz got the ball in Tigers territory with nothing but green and the keeper in front of her, and sprinted to goal before kicking the ball home.
Huggins added the third goal, which was kicked to her by Chloe LaMarre in a scrum in front of the goal in the final two minutes.
The Wildcats had outshot Burlington-Edison 9-3 in the first half with nothing to show to it, but capitalized in the second.
“It seemed to me that one way or another, we’d find a way to get a goal,” Archbishop Murphy coach Dick Henderson said. “I thought we scored a great goal with the first goal and got a little lucky on the second one.”
He said the Wildcats, who won the state championship two years ago and made it to the final four last season, feel primed for another run at state.
“We feel good and are playing well,” he said. “We haven’t got as many goals lately but we’ve had our chances.”
Alexa Hughes was in goal for Archbishop Muprhy (16-2-1-) and got the shutout.
Burlington-Ediosn coach Jay Powers said the Tigers (16-3) played well against Archbishop Murphy, especially on defense.
“The defense did some great things. Our defense has been strong all year,” he said.
