Burlington-Edison’s Lauren Atkinson had a round of 83 on Monday during the first round of the Northwest 2A District Tournament.

BURLINGTON — The first day of the Northwest 2A District girls’ golf tournament at the Skagit Golf & Country Club is in the books.

Following Monday’s play, a cut of 116 was established, and 45 golfers advanced to today’s round beginning at noon. On the line is not only the individual district crown, but 20 qualifying spots for the state 2A tournament.

The district team title was claimed by Bellingham. The Red Raiders tallied a team total of 462. On their heels was Burlington-Edison, which finished at 468.

“We played very well,” said Burlington-Edison coach Greg Knutzen. “All six of our golfers are still alive for day two and that was our No. 1 goal. It would be nice to see all six in the top 20, but we are realistic. But, hey, everyone still has a shot.”

On day one, Jennifer Lee of Sultan posted the lowest round with a 75. She was followed by Jessica Davis of Bellingham with a 77, and fellow Red Raider Claire Rachor shot the third best round with a 78.

The fourth best round came from Tate Head of Sehome with a 79, followed by Lauren Atkinson of Burlington-Edison with an 83.

Also advancing for the Tigers is Taylor Frizzell with a 93, Rachel Erickson with a 94, Kirsten Dalgliesh and Elizabeth Olsen with 99s, and Jessica Roozenkrans with a 111.

“We had five shoot under 100 today,” said Knutzen. “I am very pleased with that. That shows the depth of this team. Now the girls just have to stay positive and keep it going.”

While every Burlington-Edison golfer will tee off today, the same cannot be said for Anacortes.

Still alive for the Seahawks is Bre Hendricks, who shot the squad’s low score of 101. Sarah Burse shot a 108 while Kylee Bowker rounded out the Seahawks’ contingent that will be advancing with her round of 115.

Missing the cut for Anacortes was Carol Schwartz with a 128, Alison Farley at 141 and Linsey Cole at 142.

EVERETT — Neither Mount Vernon nor Sedro-Woolley fielded full teams on the first day of the tournament at Legion Memorial Golf Course.

That being said, both squads would have had their hands full trying to catch eventual champion Everett.

The Seahawks paced the field, shooting a round of 445.

Stefanie Soelling of Everett shot the day’s lowest round with an 82. Ferndale’s Mandy Wittmier was second with an 84.

It took a round of 102 or less to continue playing today in search of one of the 10 allocations to the state 3A tournament.

For Sedro-Woolley, Rindy McLennan putted out with a round of 86, the fifth best score on the afternoon. Joining her today will be teammates Sejeong Kim, who shot an 87 — the sixth best score at day’s end — and Alix Baker, who finished tied with five others at 99.

Sydney Volwiler was the lone Mount Vernon golfer to advance to the next round and remain in the hunt for a state spot. Volwiler’s round of 98 was the 10th best on the afternoon.

Northwest 4A District Tournament

EVERETT — And then there was one.

That is it as far as the Stanwood golfers were concerned at Everett Golf & Country Club.

That lone Spartan is Jackie Afualo, whose round of 95 advanced her into today’s battle for a spot at the state 4A tournament.

The cutoff for the second day was a round of 113. Forty golfers shot at or below the mark.

Missing the cut for Stanwood was Maggie Chappel, who shot a 115. Alexa Dugan had to withdraw due to injury.

SNOHOMISH — It was a solid day on the links for Burlington-Edison at Snohomish Golf Course.

Not only did five Tigers advance to day two of the tournament, surviving a cut of 86, they finished second in the hunt for the team title to Lynden.

The Lions came away with the crown with a total of 382. Burlington-Edison tallied a 406.

“Lynden really brought it today,” said Burlington-Edison coach Charlie Herzberg. “They played some excellent golf.”

Leading the field, however, is Squalicum’s Matt Rawitzer, who tapped out with a 67.

The five Tiger golfers will join 34 others who will continue play today for one of the 20 spots in the state tournament.

Advancing for Burlington-Edison is Sam Johnson, who shot a team-leading round of 76.

He was followed by Shane Stoupa at 80, Dallas Dimock at 81, Micah Evans at 84 and Keith Thomas at 85.

Missing the cut for the Tigers was Kevin Gardner, who shot a 91.

“We had a good day,” said Herzberg. “Those who shot 81 or 82 I believe are really in the hunt (for state spots). There are a lot of guys log-jammed at 81 and 82.

“We were able to beat some teams today we haven’t all season. I am really happy with how things went.”
