Prep Notebook: Concrete’s Smith takes top league honor

Concrete baseball player Chris Smith, who helped the Lions to a state tournament berth this season, has been named player of the year in the Northwest 2B/1A League.

La Conner’s Jeremiah LeSourd was named coach of the year, and La Conner won the sportsmanship award.

Concrete’s Kyler Howell was named to the all-league first team, as was La Conner’s Kyle McKnight.

Concrete’s Derek Rice, Jordon DeZarn, Tyler Clark and Trent Kitchen were named to the second team, as was La Conner’s Landy James.

Twedt set for all-state games

Bobby Twedt Jr. has been selected to play in the Washington All-State Baseball Games.

Twedt, Sedro-Woolley’s senior second baseman, will play Saturday and Sunday in Yakima.

He was one of 72 players from throughout the state invited to play.

The games include four teams made up of players from all the state’s classifications.

Twedt will play with Team Rainier.

He will play in a game at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Parker Field, then will get a second game on Sunday.

Twedt was invited after his showing last week in regional feeder games in Bellingham.

Miller earns MVP

Samie Miller, who helped the La Conner softball team to the best season in school history, has been named Northwest 2B/1A League most valuable player.

The Braves also earned the sportsmanship award.

La Conner’s Abi Hedlund and Kelly Gilkey were named to the first team, as was Brandi Dellinger of Concrete.

La Conner’s Jensynne Summers and Kasey Swanson were named to the second team. Concrete’s Ashley Johnson was also a second-team selection.

Local baseball players commit

Several area baseball players have committed to play for Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges teams.

Burlington-Edison’s Ian Capron will play for Skagit Valley College. Anacortes standout Marcus Abbott has committed to Centralia. And two former Sedro-Woolley Cubs are headed to the NWAACC, with Jake Howland to play for Big Bend and Ryan Morgan for Edmonds.

McKole commits

Oak Harbor girls’ soccer standout Carson McKole has committed to Central Washington University.

McKole, a four-year starter, signed a letter of intent earlier this year.

Golf teams honored

The Mount Vernon boys’ and Burlington-Edison girls’ golf teams have won academic all-state team honors.

The Bulldog boys had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.758 among eight players, best in the state at Class 3A. The Tiger girls topped 2A teams at 3.72.
