SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The Burlington-Edison girls’ soccer team scored a first-half goal against Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday night — then survived a second-half battle to keep the lead.
Alicia Shapiro scored off a Holley Bradley assist and the conference-leading Tigers held off an aggressive second-half charge from the Cubs for a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory.
The Tigers held the Cubs without a shot on goal in the first half, outshooting them 7-0, but needed several saves from defenders and goalkeeper Niki Stilwill late.
“We had a great first half. We played well and did a lot of things well,” Burlington-Edison coach Jay Powers said. “Then we talked about making some changes in the second half and got completely outclassed. Sedro-Woolley went after the ball harder. They won 50-50 balls and loose balls (in the second half).”
The Tigers (8-1, 10-2) had grabbed the lead when Bradley made an aggressive play to snag the ball, then sent it to Shapiro, who hit a 20-yard blast in the 21st minute.
While Burlington-Edison had other first-half opportunities, the Cubs had to wait for the second half before theirs opened up, including a long try from Noemi Frechette, a shot from Sarah Moquin and a try from Mackenzie Shipley.
“We had a good number of chances, it didn’t happen for us,” Sedro-Woolley coach Bernd Strom said.
Strom said that the Cubs (2-7 in conference, 2-9 overall) are still battling despite a rocky start to the season.
“Given a difficult first half of the season, they still believe,” he said.
Stilwill had three second-half saves, including a stop on one of the Cubs’ best opportunities in the 58th minute when she batted a try out of goal.
Sedro-Woolley goalkeeper Emilie Moser, a freshman, had eight saves, including a stop on a one-on-one opportunity for Burlington-Edison early and an impressive stop on a short shot in the 73rd minute.
“I told her at halftime that a good goalkeeper can keep you in games, and that’s what she did,” Strom said.
