CHENEY — Mount Vernon Christian’s Jacki Taylor came away Saturday with two state titles — one individual title and one as part of a team. The Hurricane senior claimed a victory in the 400-meter dash (58.26 seconds) and ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team at the Class 2B State Track and Field Championships.
The relay team’s other members were Madeleine Dye, Kaylin Weidenbach and Jolene Houtsma.
The same runners also made up the Hurricanes’ 400 relay team, which took second to Colfax in 51.83.
Kylie Whitener was the other placer for the Hurricane girls, taking third place in the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 9 inches.
On the boys’ side for the Hurricanes, Jeffrey McClelland took third place in the 300 hurdles (41.23).
The MVC boys’ 1,600 relay team of David Riley, Mark Hogan, Derrick DeVries and McClelland broke the school record with a time of 3:29.35, topping the old record of 3:29.55.
“Overall it was a very good weekend,” Hurricanes’ coach Linda Gudmunson said. “There was definitely some concern about how hot it was and how the kids would handle it. ... They worked it out.”
Concrete’s Kevin August didn’t have quite enough spring left in his legs following a busy Friday at the state track and field meet.
August finished eighth in the high jump, clearing 5-10-. St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Warren Miller won (6-4).
