MOUNT VERNON — The Anacortes volleyball team passed another early-season test.
The Seahawks, who beat perennial power La Conner earlier this year, bounced back from a first-game loss to topple Class 3A Mount Vernon on Thursday, 22-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-20.
The victory improves Anacortes’ record to 2-1 in Northwest Conference play.
Mount Vernon dropped to 2-1.
Anacortes coach Ashley Abrams said the victory was one of the Seahawks’ better efforts so far in the early season.
“They came together and played more together as a team than earlier in the season,” she said. “They had specific roles they knew to play — the serves were on and they were a lot more consistent.”
The first game was tied at 20 before Mount Vernon reeled off a 5-2 run to claim the win.
After that, Anacortes was the team to separate itself from the competition.
The second game was tied at 15 before Anacortes outscored Mount Vernon 10-5.
The third game was as close as four points midway through before the Seahawks got the win.
In the fourth game, Anacortes trailed 16-15 before a kill by Tyler Calles tied it at 16.
The Seahawks never trailed or were tied again as they went on a 9-4 run over the next 13 points for the game and match.
“After the first game, they turned it up a notch,” Abrams said.
