MARYSVILLE — The Stanwood volleyball team pulled off one epic victory, but a second was not in the offering.
The Spartans came up one match short of a state berth Saturday, falling to Marysville-Pilchuck 25-19 25-15, 25-18 in the battle for the Northwest 4A District’s third seed.
Earlier in the day, the Spartans, the No. 4 seed from the Western Conference’s North Division, knocked off South Division No. 2 Kamiak 9-25, 28-26, 27-25, 17-25, 16-14 in a marathon do-or-die contest. The Spartans fended off four straight match points in the fifth game, winning six straight to take the contest.
Stanwood also trailed by four late in the third game before winning.
Monroe beat Edmonds-Woodway in five games to win the district title. Both teams had already clinched state berths.
