KENNEWICK — For the second straight year, the Burlington-Edison volleyball team is bringing home a seventh-place trophy.
The Tigers split matches on the second day of the Class 2A State Tournament, eliminating Anacortes in three games Saturday afternoon before falling to Pullman in four games in the match to determine fourth and seventh places.
The Tigers placed for the third year in a row, taking fifth place in 2006.
“I thought they played really well,” Tigers coach Tawnya Brewer said. “They never gave up to the very end, so I’m proud of that. We’re a small team, and we were up against a huge block against Pullman. It’s tough when you’re height-challenged.”
Pullman topped Burlington-Edison 25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21.
Kinsey Davis had 18 kills and Rachel Tingley 14 against Pullman. Katlyn Mataya finished with 36 assists. Davis had 20 kills, Tingley 10 kills, and Mataya 27 assists against Anacortes.
“Rachel Tingley had a great tournament, probably the best she’s ever played,” Brewer said. “Her leadership was outstanding.”
Davis finished with the tournament with 99 kills.
The Tigers opened the day with a 25-16, 25-10, 25-17 victory over Anacortes, eliminating the Seahawks from the tournament.
“We did better than when we played them last time,” Anacortes coach Ashley Abrams said, referring to a four-game Tiger win in the regular season. “We just got behind a couple times. Once we got in a rhythm, we came back as much as we could.”
Individual statistics were not available for the Seahawks. Anacortes finishes the season at 14-7.
“Definitely, I’m happy,” Abrams said. “We had a lot of people step up. It was a big improvement. The seniors will be missed, but we have a lot of good young girls coming up. I’m very proud.”
Tumwater beat Selah 15-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-12 in the championship match, ending Selah’s run of three straight state championships. Lynden took third, losing to Tumwater in the semifinals before sweeping Black Hills.
