BURLINGTON — A propane truck rolled over this morning in the 1500 block of Josh Wilson Road in Burlington, just east of Bay View Elementary School.
The crash, which happened just before 10:30 a.m., closed Josh Wilson Road to traffic from Airport Way to the west and Avon Allen Road to the east.
The truck was fully loaded with propane and headed westbound on Josh Wilson when the wheels left the pavement, said Chief Criminal Deputy Will Reichardt of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.
The truck rolled into the ditch and then tipped over. The driver sustained minor injuries, but the truck did not leak propane, Reichardt said. The driver was cited for driving with the wheels off of the roadway and driving while operating a cell phone, he said.
Because of the crash’s proximity to Bay View Elementary School, the building was initially on lockdown, meaning students could not leave the school or go outside. That designation was later lifted, and normal school operations resumed, said Amy Staudenraus, an administrative intern at Bay View Elementary.
Officers kept the road closed until after school was let out, Reichardt said.
Parents were asked pick up their students by accessing the school from the west, Staudenraus said. Some buses were expected to run late.
An empty propane truck from Bellingham unloaded the propane from the tipped truck before tow trucks removed the truck from the side of the road, Reichardt said.
