Anacortes real estate companies are planning to be part of a state-wide open house this weekend to help the housing market get more exposure.
“We are hoping to have 200 houses or more open that weekend,” said Candy Cooper, owner and broker of Allied Realtors in Anacortes and president of North Puget Sound Association of REALTORS.
The organization, which covers north Whidbey Island and all of Skagit County, plans to participate in the Saturday and Sunday event.
“The purpose is to stimulate sales,” Cooper said.
She said Whatcom County did a similar event three months ago with about 400 homes open to the public.
“Sales increased the next month by 125 percent. It works,” she said.
Cooper said she started seeing more activity in the beginning part of June. She said with good prices and interest rates, she expects to stay busy.
“We’re seeing a lot more pendings, a lot more activity,” Cooper said.
Home sales are still weak compared to last year, but sales have stayed consistent the past three months.
Anacortes had 16 closed sales in March, 15 in April and 16 in May. That’s down from 20 in March 2008, 19 in April 2008 and 35 in May 2008.
The good news is, pending sales are up compared to this time last year, with 30 sales pending in May compared to 25 in May 2008.
Average and median sale prices are lower than the same time last year. Real estate leaders say homes in the lower price range are moving more.
The median sale price for January-May 2009 was $310,000, compared to $372,500 for the same time in 2008. The average sale price for the first part of this year was about $335,500, compared to about $406,400 for the same time period in 2008.
