A project that will replace substandard materials and provide safety enhancements to the Guemes Island ferry terminals on Fidalgo and Guemes islands is set to begin the first week of the new year.

Some of the work — to rehabilitate and repair existing wingwalls at each terminal — will have to be done at low tide due to the elevation of the wingwalls.

Because low tides are prevalent in the early morning this time of year, the work will most likely be done between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The goal is also to not interrupt ferry service, said project manager Jennifer Swanson with Skagit County public works.

The department has obtained a noise variance from the city of Anacortes because of the nighttime construction and also asks ferry users to be aware that unforeseen circumstances could lead to delays or cancellations of runs.

Work on the Guemes Island side will also involve the removal of two creosote and steel pile dolphins, the repair of one damaged steel dolphin and the replacement of turnbuckles and chains on four existing dolphins. That work is expected to be done during the day.

The project is expected to be completed in February.
