BURLINGTON — The man suspected of robbing a Sedro-Woolley bank before a confrontation with a police officer Tuesday died of two self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office says.
William Allen Chapman, 51, of Mount Vernon, died in a Seattle hospital. Authorities said Chapman died Tuesday night. The autopsy was performed today.
Doctors at the King County Medical Examiners office found two entrance wounds to his skull, according to a press release from Chief Criminal Sheriff’s Deputy Will Reichardt. They recovered one .22 caliber bullet from Chapman’s brain, and the other round apparently exited the skull.
At the time of the shooting, Chapman was armed with a .22 caliber pistol, and several .22 caliber shell casings were recovered at the scene. A civilian witness to the shooting described seeing Chapman holding a pistol near his own head just before seeing Chapman fall to the ground.
The Mount Vernon police officer who was at the scene did fire his .40 caliber pistol. Several spent .40 caliber shell casings were recovered at the scene, according to the press release. Officer Tom Wenzl, 20-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police Department, remains on administrative leave during the investigation.
Chapman was suspected of robbing a bank in Sedro-Woolley late Tuesday morning, according to a spokeswoman with the FBI. Police then pursued him behind the Home Depot store on Whitmarsh Road in Burlington.
The incident began after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Sedro-Woolley. A witness outside of Skagit State Bank on Carter Road called 911 to report a robbery in progress.
A Sedro-Woolley police officer spotted a suspect in a red Jeep driving north of Sedro-Woolley, but lost sight of the vehicle. Another officer saw the vehicle coming back into the city in the southbound lane of Highway 9. A short while later, a sheriff’s deputy saw the Jeep driving out of Sedro-Woolley west on Highway 20 toward Burlington, Reichardt said.
Officer Wenzl was riding a motorcycle near the bridge on Riverside when he saw the Jeep behind the Home Depot store and pursued it. Chapman stopped the Jeep on the right side of Whitmarsh Road at 11:55 a.m., exited the car and started to flee on foot. The two exchanged fire, with both firing several shots, Reichardt said.
Officer Wenzl was not hurt.
The shooting is being investigated by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, Burlington police and the State Patrol. The investigating agencies will give their reports to the Mount Vernon police after they’re completed. Then the Mount Vernon department will do its own investigation.
The FBI and the Sedro-Woolley Police Department are investigating the bank robbery.
