Carrying 76 percent of the votes counted Tuesday night, incumbent Port of Anacortes Keith Rubin appeared well on his way to a second term in District 5, defeating challenger Guy Davidson.
In the three contested port commissioner races, the top issue was the role the commissioners should play in the community’s economic development.
In District 5, Davidson, 48, a real estate broker and an owner of Majestic Inn and Spa, has said the port’s properties are underutilized. Davidson has said he wants to sell bonds to finance improvements that could bring more tenants and businesses to the area.
Rubin, 56, a retiree who worked as a seafood processing plant manager, a ferrier and as the owner and manager of several rental properties, said the port has added businesses during his term and will continue to expand. Rubin’s concern is protecting the port from residential encroachment that he believes could restrict some industries from doing business on the Guemes Channel waterfront.
