Two vacancies on the Sedro-Woolley planning commission have been filled.

Mayor Mike Anderson appointed Terry L. Carter Sr. and Tom Peterson to the planning commission in July.

Peterson is filling the vacancy of former planning commissioner Chris Bulcroft who resigned from the commission in June. Bulcroft’s term lasts until 2012.

Carter is replacing former planning commissioner Kevin Loy who left in February. Loy’s term runs until 2009.

“The city had a lot of applicants, but these were the two people who stood out,” the mayor said.

Anderson said Peterson’s experience as a former planning commissioner in Sedro-Woolley made him an ideal candidate. He served nearly 11 years ago.

Anderson said Carter stood out as a candidate because of his work with the community food bank and his enthusiasm to join the planning commission. Carter serves as the administrator for Helping Hands Food Bank.

Carter has attended several City Council meetings, Anderson said. Anyone with that amount of interest would more than likely do a good job as a planning commissioner, he said.

Both Carter and Peterson will probably have new ideas they can bring to the planning commission, the mayor said.

The city planning commission meets once a month. Their primary responsibilities include working on city zoning regulations, development code and comprehensive plan amendments. Unlike other planning departments, the city’s planning commissioners do not have direct say on specific projects.

The two new planning commissioners said they applied for the positions because it’s a good way to be involved and give back to the community.
