The Burlington-Edison Education and Alumni Foundation awarded scholarships to 31 Burlington-Edison High School graduates.

B-EHS Band Boosters

Mitchell Hassler, son of Earl and Renata Hassler of Burlington, received an $800 scholarship from the Burlington-Edison High School Band Boosters. Hassler plans to attend Skagit Valley College, then transfer to Central Washington University. His study plans include music, fire administration and paramedic.

National MS Society

Elizabeth Young of Anacortes and Jewell Orr of Sedro-Woolley received $3,000 scholarships from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The Society has awarded scholarships since 2005 to state students who have multiple sclerosis or whose parents have the disease. Recipients were selected based on academic performance, financial need, volunteer and extracurricular activities and essays they wrote about the impact MS has had on their lives. john c 6/6/08

North Cascade Eye Associates

Mount Vernon High School senior Joseph Oelfke received the $1,000 Excellence in Education Scholarship from North Cascades Eye Associates. Oelfke is the son of Jack and Lori Oelfke of Mount Vernon. He will major in exercise science at Pacific University. The annual scholarship is awarded to an area student interested in a medicine or health care administration career.

and Alumni Foundation

The Burlington-Edison Education and Alumni Foundation has announced its 2008 scholarship recipients. The foundation awarded an all-time high 31 scholarships worth some $43,000.

John and Genevieve Ball Memorial Scholarship: Noah Lizotte, son of Scott Lizotte of Mount Vernon and Allene Lizotte of Sedro-Woolley, plans to attend Central Washington University and study construction management and architecture.

Dr. Ron Browne Memorial Scholarship: Ryan Bart, son of Michael and Liz Bart of Bow, will attend Gonzaga University and enroll in the pre-medicine program.

Gene and Shirley Entrikin Family Scholarship: Stacey Schutte, daughter of Gerry Schutte and Kim Blumenhagen, both of Burlington, plans to attend Washington State University to study education.

Jack Fickel Memorial Scholarship: Michael Drummond, son of David and Sarah Drummond of Burlington, will attend Washington State University to study accounting or business management.

David and Fran Hansen Family Scholarships:

Lindsey Loving, daughter of PJ and Kari Loving of Burlington, will attend Washington State University and study nursing.

Curtis Post, son of Tim Post of Sedro-Woolley and Catherine Post, plans to attend Seattle Central Community College and study graphic arts.

Mildred Gaskin Memorial Scholarship: Andrew Jansen, son of Michael and Jane Jansen of Burlington, will attend the University of Washington and study computer science.

Roland Kirkby Memorial Scholarship: Jake Anderson, son of Thomas and Cynthia Anderson of Burlington, plans to attend Seattle Pacific University and study education and sports leadership.

Elmer and Mabel Martin Family Scholarships:

Theodore Charles, son of Douglas and Catherine Charles of Bow, will attend Pacific Lutheran University to study history and global studies.

Daniel Grillot, son of Tom and Cindy Grillot of Mount Vernon, will attend Skagit Valley College to study multi-media/ interactive technology and computer information systems.

Lacey Moore, daughter of Gerald and Rebecca Moore of Burlington, will attend Washington State University.

Billy Wibbens, son of William and Sue Wibbens of Bow, plans to attend Skagit Valley College and study art and graphic design.

Therese Ovenell Memorial: Kelsie Ovenell, daughter of Jeff and Kristal Ovenell of Burlington, will study sports medicine at the University of Washington.

Skagit Rebekah Lodge No. 82 Scholarship: Rebecca Hargis, daughter of Richard and Beth Hargis of Bow, will attend Whitworth University.

Walt Schuh Memorial Scholarships:

Sylvie Luiten, daughter of Dennis Luiten and Monika Luiten of Burlington, plans to attend Whitman University and study animal science or zoology (veterinary medicine).

Ariel Erlenbach, daughter of Melissa Erlenbach of Burlington, will attend Skagit Valley College and Washington State University to study agriculture education.

Pat Smith Memorial Scholarship: Katie Griffith, daughter of Peter and Susan Griffith of Mount Vernon, will study physical education and health at Southern Oregon University.

Dr. Fred and Betty Stump Family Scholarship: Sarah Berentson, daughter of David and Judy Berentson of Mount Vernon, will study education psychology at Whitworth University.

Kirk and Paula Wilson Family Scholarships:

Kyle Barkdull, son of Eric and Maureen Barkdull of Mount Vernon, will attend Whatcom Community College to earn a transfer degree in science.

Corinne Brownell, daughter of Kirk and Sandra Brownell of Burlington, plans to study early childhood development and psychology at BYU-Idaho.

Rachel Findlay, daughter of Jay and DeAnn Findlay of Bow, will study biology at BYU.

Jessica James, daughter of the late Barry James and Sandra James of Mount Vernon, plans to study animal science at BYU-Idaho.

Keegan Palmer, son of James and Janie Palmer of Sedro-Woolley, will attend Skagit Valley College and BYU to study criminal justice and Spanish.

Anailia Ortez, daughter of Miguel Ortez and Evelia Madera of Burlington, will attend BYU-Idaho.

Linnea Stegner, daughter of Harry and Barbara Stegner of Mount Vernon, will study education and French at Washington State University.

Olivia Doyle, daughter of John and Carol Doyle of Burlington, will study business or exercise science (sports medicine) at Gonzaga University.

Byron Furney, son of Albert and Rachelle Furney of Mount Vernon, plans to study computer science at Boise State University.

Brad Hockett, son of Craig and Becky Hockett of Sedro-Woolley, will study engineering at Washington State University.

Hector Miranda, son of Juan and Pilar Dolgudo of Burlington, plans to study business administration at Western Washington University.

Kathi W. Life Award: Jake Updegraff, son of Rick and Tanya Arnone of Burlington, plans to study communications/political science at Central Washington University.

“In the Spirit of Joey” Award: Liisa Cushing, daughter of Michael and Cathy Cushing of Sedro-Woolley, will enroll in the journalism program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The Burlington-Edison Education and Alumni Foundation was established in 1993 to enhance the learning experience of Burlington-Edison students. Scholarships are funded via individual and group donations and Foundation fundraising activities.

REFINERY OPERATOR Tesoro is currently seeking to fill the position of Refinery Operator at its Anacortes facility. An Operator monitors and controls refinery process equipment while working a rotating 12-hour shift, often outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. This can be a physically/mentally challenging job requiring mechanical ability and a basic understanding of physical sciences and chemistry. In addition, candidates must possess a positive work ethic, good communications and teamworking skills and have the willingness to take personal responsibility for the safety of themselves and others. Starting wage will be $21.38 per hour that will initially increase to $25.59 after successful completion of training.
