Anacortes Kiwanis Sunrisers

The Anacortes Kiwanis Sunrisers presented $1,000 scholarship awards to 10 Anacortes High School seniors: Spencer Andrich, Kenneth Birkeland, Stephen Hudak, Amy Jones, Morgan Jones, Lindsey Lofgren, Alexander Lytton, Matthew Phelan and Alexander Thomson. Robert Hammond was presented the Dick Harrison Memorial Scholarship in memory of the late Dick Harrison’s contributions to Kiwanis and the Anacortes community.

Burlington-Edison

Kiwanis Club

The Burlington-Edison Kiwanis Club awarded nine education scholarships totaling $7,400 to Burlington-Edison High School seniors.

$1,200 Academic Scholarships: Sarah Berentson, daughter of Dave and Judy Berentson, Whitworth. Katie Reed, daughter of Joseph and Linda Reed, Washington State University. Sarah Thramer, daughter of Greg and Robin Thramer, University of Washington.

$1,200 Key Club Scholarships: Theodore Charles, the son of Doug and Catherine Charles, Whitman College. April Telan, daughter of Norman and Jessica Telan, University of Washington. Sylvie Luiten, daughter of Dennis Luiten and Monika Luiten-Halter, Whitman College.

$1,000 Steve Johns Memorial/Technical Training Scholarship: Daniel Grillot, the son of Tom and Cindy Grillot, Skagit Valley College. 

Skagit Valley College Transfer Scholarship: Ariel Erlenbach, the daughter of Melissa Erlenbach, will receive $1,800 over the next three years.

The Kiwanis club also awarded Jamie Halpin, daughter of Jeanne Gardner and James Halpin, a special SVC scholarship to recognize her academic achievements.

Salem Lutheran Church

Salem Lutheran Church of Mount Vernon awarded 14 scholarships to local students.

$1,000 Signe and Norman Hamburg Memorial Scholarship: Tiari Skrinde, daughter of David and Tracie Skrinde of Mount Vernon, is a senior at Oregon State University studying nutrition.

$750 Agnes S. Sunnell Memorial Scholarship: Emily Lorente, daughter of Mary Pat and David Lorente of Mount Vernon, is a sophomore at Whitman College studying education and religion.

$750 Andrew and Myrtle Loft Memorial Scholarship: Johann Struck, son of Peg and Josef Struck of Mount Vernon, is a senior studying philosophy at the University of Washington.

$750 Lillian and Daniel Sundquist Memorial Scholarship: Jerry Johnson, son of Candy and John Johnson of Mount Vernon, is a sophomore studying exercise science at Eastern Washington University.

Salem Lutheran scholarships of $575 were awarded to 10 students:

Jessica Anderson, daughter of Rick and Krista Anderson of Mount Vernon; Jolene Timm, daughter of Bobbi Strege of Mount Vernon; and Bryan Frank, son of Alan Frank and Chris Jadro of Mount Vernon, all will attend Skagit Valley College.

Jason Frank, son of Alan Frank and Chris Jadro of Mount Vernon, will study biochemistry at Grossmont College in El Cajon, Calif. Chris Fredlund, son of Jim and Cheri Fredlund of Mount Vernon, will attend Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. Katie Van Selus, daughter of Gene and Pam Van Selus of Mount Vernon, will attend Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.

Brandy Anderson, daughter of Gary and Kathy Anderson of Mount Vernon, is a sophomore at Eastern Washington University studying biology/premed.

John Gilbert, son of Sharon and Robert Gilbert of Mount Vernon, is a junior in exercise metabolism and physiology at Washington State University.

Shelby Koopmans, daughter of Ed Koopmans and Kim and Danny Sanford of Lyman, is a senior in communication disorders at Eastern Washington University.

Cameron Wiemerslage, son of Keith and Carol Wiemerslage of Sedro-Woolley, is a junior studying mass communication/broadcasting at Boise State University.

Art League North

Art League North of Mount Vernon awarded $1,000 scholarships to three area seniors based on portfolios of the students’ artwork. All three students plan to study art in college: Henry Aesoph of Oak Harbor High School, the son of Jon and Laura Aesoph of Coupeville; Alli Curtis of Stanwood High School, the daughter of Richard and Vicki Curtis of Stanwood; and Licett Aviles of Stanwood High School, the daughter of Jesus Aviles and Yolanda Trejo.

NW Plus Credit Union

Mount Vernon High School student Kacie Cook received a $500 scholarship from NW Plus Credit Union. Cook plans to study business and accounting.

SV Medical Center Pharmacy

Skagit Valley Medical Center’s pharmacy awarded $1,000 scholarships to three Burlington-Edison High School seniors in June for their academic and community excellence. Jake Anderson will attend Seattle Pacific University. Josh Simpson plans to study physical education at Central University. Krista Studebaker plans to study pharmacy or nursing at the University of Washington.

Lynden Memorial Scholarship

Kelsey Bullock, daughter of Ken and Cher Bullock of Mount Vernon, received a $1,000 scholarship from Lynden Inc. She is a junior in premed at Andrews University in Michigan. The scholarship was one of eight awarded to children of Lynden company employees for the 2008-09 academic year. Bullock’s father works for Brown Line LLC in Mount Vernon.

An Operator monitors and controls refinery process equipment while working a rotating 12-hour shift, often outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
