FEDERAL WAY — Mallorie Estenson stayed calm. Katie Kaestner got faster.
In the end, both Anacortes athletes came away with championships Saturday afternoon at the Class 2A state swimming and diving championships to help the Seahawks to a fourth-place finish.
“It was a fantastic day,” Anacortes coach Leslie Mix said.
Kaestner, a sophomore, won two individual championships. First she won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.41 seconds, bettering her preliminary time of 53.70. For an encore, she turned in a blistering 1:06.27 to win the 100 breaststroke. The time didn’t merely better her prelim time of 1:07.90; it also set a new Class 2A meet record and earned All-American consideration.
“I knew I had the potential to swim a six (1:06),” she said.
Estenson, who was second in diving last year as a freshman, turned in a steady performance to outscore the girl who beat her last season, River Ridge’s Asha Srivastava, 300.90-262.85. Estenson pulled away in the last three dives, outscoring Srivastava 92.35-55.15 to widen a narrow gap she had built in prelims.
“I felt calm throughout the meet, when usually I’m jittery. That helped,” Estenson said. “Psychologically, I’m a diver now ... I’m more into it mentally.”
Anacortes diving coach Gilbert Ballow said Estenson’s mental approach helped give her an edge during the meet held at King County Aquatic Center.
“I’ve seen it in very, very few athletes: She can walk into a meet and not be intimidated,” he said. “Her dives were very consistent and solid. That’s what it takes to be a diver.”
While Kaestner and Estenson captured crowns for the Seahawks, Mix was also pleased by the improvements made by several of the team’s other athletes. Jenna Whitney, who was seeded eighth in the 100 breaststroke, shaved more than a second off her time for a fifth-place finish, improving from 1:13.18 to 1:11.51.
The 200 medley relay team of Hannah Brennan, Emily Akland, Whitney and Kaestner improved from 2:00.89 to 2:00.32 to claim third place. The 200 freestyle relay team, which had the same members, also dropped time, slicing off more than a second to go from 1:47.95 to 1:46.20 for a fourth-place finish.
“Both relays swan fantastic. It was a great day all around,” Mix said.
Whitney, a sophomore, also turned in a sixth-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:22.64). Hannah Brennan was seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:40.82). La Conner’s Isabel Sible, who trains with the Seahawaks, was eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:23.98).
As expected, the Northwest Conference represented itself well in the Class 2A meet, with Squalicum winning the state title with 77 points and Sehome claiming second with 68. Hockinson had 59 to edge Anacortes (58).
